Sophia Mitiku Releases Sophomore Album all sickness is homesickness

Sophia Mitiku unveiled her second studio album, all sickness is homesickness, out on August 29, 2025. Based in Helsinki and rooted in both Korean and Ethiopian heritage, Mitiku has always pulled from multiple worlds to shape her sound, and this new project feels like an intimate extension of that journey.

The album arrives after the release of two standout singles, samsara and delta, both of which offered glimpses into the record’s voice-forward, immersive direction. Across its tracks, Mitiku explores migration, memory, grief, and the constant reshaping of identity. “I draw a lot from my background and heritage, how memory and ways of being stretch across borders, languages, and body; especially in relation to terrestrial landscapes,” she explains. “This record is my way of making sense of all that.”

At its core, all sickness is homesickness is a project about belonging, displacement, and the ties that outlive geography. The title itself suggests that every form of dislocation carries with it a kind of yearning for home, for familiarity, for wholeness. The opening track, tizita, draws on Ethiopian traditions of memory and nostalgia, immediately setting a reflective tone. Later, they make a desert and call it peace references Calgacus’ speech against imperial conquest, expanding the album’s themes beyond the personal into something historic and political.

Collaboration also plays a central role in the record. Mauri Syrjälä, Matto Ahopelto, Isabella Shaw, and Kenyan composer Nyokabi Kariuki contribute their voices and sounds, bringing depth to Mitiku’s vision. These moments of shared creativity push the album away from being a solo statement and toward something communal, a weaving together of stories, histories, and sounds.

The release isn’t just about recorded music either. To bring all sickness is homesickness to life, Mitiku has shows lined up across Finland, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Korea. The record will be available both digitally and on vinyl, making it accessible whether you want to hold the project in your hands or stream it wherever you are.

all sickness is homesickness arrives August 29, and it feels like an album to feel, remember, and reflect.
