Jazunique Crafts Is Single-Handedly Inspiring The New York Art Scene

It’s not easy being an artist, but it’s harder denying who you were created to be. This awakening prompts many questions, and in other cases, many dilemmas. One of those beautiful dilemmas is one the world is reaping the benefits of. This question has circulated for ages; Did you choose art or did art choose you? The differences between an artist who chooses art, and was handpicked by art is uncanny, but they all carry a beautiful middle ground that allows “the art appreciator” to enjoy. In this case, art chose Jazunique Crafts. Jazunique Crafts, is the multimedia artist based in New York who is inspiring everyone to tap into their inner artist. Chi was able to engage in a depth-filled conversation with Jazunique about her journey, inspirations, and processes, and we are excited to share with you all.

Chi: Who are you?

Jazunique: I’m Jazunique, an African American female artist.

Chi: Where are you from?

Jazunique: In regards to nationality, I’m Black American. I’m southern but I was born in New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant ( a neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY) Marcy projects to be exact.

Chi: What are your specific mediums?

Jazunique: My personal favorite is acrylic paint but I love ALL art mediums from coloured pencils, to markers and anything that helps bring art alive.

Chi: Did you choose art or did art choose you?

Jazunique: Honestly, I feel like art chose me, since a child I loved creating things. I think that developed from my mom working so much when I was younger. I was always kept in multiple programs as a child.

Chi: Where do you draw inspiration?

Jazunique: I draw inspiration from my family, my culture and doubt. I love the idea of evolution, and in that you constantly have to learn. I always try to understand who I am and art provides a sense of clarity for that.

Chi: Why do you choose to consistently create?

Jazunique: I create because it’s beauty in a process, it’s beauty in imagining things and being able to use God’s gifts to bring things to life, it’s rewarding. Art is freeing with limitless possibilities and that’s what I would love to continue to show people through this artist process.

Jazunique Crafts is an artistic torch holder, blazing the dimly lit torches of the artists surrounding her, and the ones to come after her. The world knows New York as “the city that never sleeps”, but because of artists like Jazunique, it is “the city that consistently inspires”. Jazunique Crafts is an inspiration in every sense of the word who shows everyone the power of being who you are on purpose. Where there is authenticity there is peace, and where there is effort there is fruit, plenty of it.
