On July 10, the indie-pop singer-songwriter returns with his latest single, “Lake Michigan,” alongside an official music video. Following the release of “Still Turn This Around,” the new track offers another look into Hoppe’s upcoming album, Safer at a Distance, while exploring ambition, expectations, and learning to accept that life rarely goes exactly as planned.
Built around warm grooves, shimmering melodies, and an easy-going atmosphere, “Lake Michigan” carries a hopeful feeling despite the uncertainty at the heart of its story.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Hoppe explains:
“It’s a story about driving from the East Coast to the West Coast, hoping to make it to the Pacific Ocean. But life never goes as planned, and sometimes you’ve got to make peace with only ever making it to Lake Michigan after all, they basically look the same.”
That simple idea becomes the heart of the record. Rather than focusing on disappointment, Hoppe reflects on the beauty of accepting where life takes you. Sometimes the destination changes, but that does not mean the journey loses its value.
The single also continues to introduce the world of Safer at a Distance. Across the project, Hoppe explores his relationship with music, ambition, and the uncertainty that often comes with chasing a creative career. His own path into music reflects that same sense of uncertainty.
Before becoming a full-time musician, Hoppe studied finance while playing college basketball at New York University. During that time, songwriting slowly became more than just a hobby. When the pandemic arrived, he made the decision to fully commit to music, supporting himself through service industry jobs while writing, producing, and releasing his own songs.
After spending seven years in New York City, Hoppe recently relocated to Los Angeles, where he continues to grow both as an artist and as a producer, working alongside other musicians while developing his own sound.
Hoppe first introduced listeners to his songwriting with his 2021 debut EP, Tell Me How It’s Worth It. The project showcased a style built around emotional honesty and cinematic storytelling, something that has remained at the centre of his music ever since.
He continued building on that foundation with Everything That’s Wrong with You in 2022 and Just Look At The Moon in 2023. Along the way, his music has earned recognition from publications including Notion, Ones To Watch, and EARMILK, helping establish him as one of the independent artists quietly making a name for themselves.
