What’s New This Summer With Shalom Fred-Jatto: Silk Scarves

Hello reader, you have stumbled upon what I like to call “What’s new this summer”. Get ready to discover patterns and trends I’m observing and kinda obsessed with, that seems to be flooding my social media explore pages.

When the sun is out so are the bright colours, summer dresses, sandals, shorts, shades, and baggy graphic tees. Don’t get me wrong I love all of those, you can’t go wrong with a summer dress or a graphic tee with some shorts, but what if you can elevate your summer wardrobe with just a single item, and what if said item was a scarf?

We all love a good scarf moment. It’s been done before. You all remember the days where scarfs became the new go to accessory. They were worn as tops, head ties, bag accessories or even tied around your wrist as a bracelet. But what if we added one more use for the silk scarf? Lately, I have been seeing people using their scarf as a skirt and I love it, you can see this style on fashion icons like Alexa Chung on the streets of London, Chloë Sevigny and Leandra Medine Cohen. Remember the time where buttoned shirts were used as skirts and even dresses, well this is somewhat similar.

Some people might be thinking “oh, but this has been done before, right?” This was the same thought that also crossed my mind when I first caught wind of it. But what really sold me on it was the layering aspect of it.

Okay, yes, layering is a winter thing but there isn’t a rule against taking it into your summer closet. The key to not overheating is keeping the layers thin and light. With this, you can experiment with different colours, texture and materials. I am an all-back type of girl even in the summer. I know, boring, but with this new scarf wearing method, I can easily add a splatter of colour to my typical dim summer closet.

If your summer wardrobe feels stuck on repeat, let a scarf skirt do the work, and the talking for you.
