On July 30th, House of EL released “Egyptian Cotton Sweats”, a track that questions whether modern life’s comforts are holding us back more than helping us. At first listen, you may not notice its deeper meaning, the song production is smooth and catchy, you’ll be vibing to it instantly. You wouldn’t expect such a head nodding song to hit deep and speak of something thought-provoking.
“Egyptian Cotton Sweats” follows his earlier 2025 releases, the politically charged “Dirty Tricks” and the soulful “Say It Ain’t So”, continuing his run of tracks that in my opinion, if listeners really listen, it will make them think as much as they move.
Built on warm, minimal production, “Egyptian Cotton Sweats” takes aim at what House of EL calls “comfort culture.” In his words:
“We wrap ourselves in comfort, but maybe comfort has become our chains. Maybe we’ve traded wonder for Wi-Fi, and joy for a direct debit and package holidays.”
It’s a step inward from the political commentary of “Dirty Tricks”, focusing instead on personal awareness and how convenience can dull our senses.
The single also marks the official announcement of his upcoming EP “What If All Fails?”, out August 27th. According to the press release, the EP will expand on themes of truth, illusion, and identity while showcasing House of EL’s songwriting and production skills.
House of EL is the creative project of Kieron McIntosh — a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter whose credits include Becky Hill & Chase & Status’s platinum hit “Disconnect”, as well as work with Janelle Monáe, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Joey Bada$$, Paloma Faith, and more. His music blends elements of soul, indie, and cinematic electronica, influenced by artists like Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Massive Attack, and Joy Division.
Over the past year, he’s gained support from outlets such as Notion, COLORS, Wonderland, Complex UK, Billboard, Clash, and BBC Radio 1 & 6. His songs have been placed on major Spotify playlists like New Music Friday UK and Free Form, and have been used in campaigns for Lancôme, TV series like Hanna and The Equalizer, and games like NBA 2K.
“Egyptian Cotton Sweats” is the next chapter in House of EL’s sharp, soul-stirring output and stands as proof that meaningful, artful music still cuts through the noise when it comes from a place of truth. For House of EL, the goal isn’t just to entertain, it’s to make listeners think about how they live.
As for what comes next, we’ll find out when “When all else fails” comes out on August 27th. I wonder what will be his next political awakening he shares with the rest of us?
