The 40th annual Video Music Awards were hosted last night, September 11, 2024, by Houston’s best Megan thee Stallion. The show lasted three hours and featured over twenty different award categories. The 2024 ceremony will go down in history as a momentous one, with Chappell Roan taking the stage for her first VMA show, Katy Perry receiving the award for video vanguard, and Taylor Swift, who is now the most-awarded artist in VMA history.
Let’s Talk Outfits
Celebrities walked the MTV red carpet in some highly intriguing and eye-opening attire, as is customary for any Hollywood event. Chappell Roan, the nominee for best new artist, astounded onlookers by walking down the red carpet holding a sword. The well-planned ensemble perfectly complimented her own flair.
Wearing a stunning vintage Bob Mackie dress, Sabrina Carpenter looked stunning on the red carpet. The pop icon actually wore the very Madonna-esque ensemble at the 1991 awards. Is this a hint of the heights the Espresso singer hopes to reach in the future?
Well-known TikTok star and “diet Pepsi” vocalist Addison Rae dazzled on the carpet wearing a Claire Sullivan outfit. She was still going to turn heads and make people talk, even though she was not up for any awards.
Katy Perry showed off her unconventional QR code tattoo on her lower back when she arrived at the carpet wearing a white two-piece suit from Who Decides War. The performer achieved the desired wet look flawlessly, avoiding the appearance of needing to be given a towel.
Lil Nas X, known for his outlandish clothes, arrived at the performance wearing a interesting-looking pink leather outfit that looked like something out of a superhero movie.
Could anyone forget our host? As Megan the Stallion walked the red-carpet wearing Nicole + Felicia Couture, she looked breathtaking.
All in all, the celebrities at this year’s VMA’s did not come to play with their outfits.
The Performances
Megan thee Stallion had a powerful set during the show, performing three songs off her self-titled album, Megan; BOA, BAS, but Mamushi featuring Yuki Chiba stole the show. Megan exudes an air of natural talent—from her attire to her dancing skills. We only wish she had performed ‘Wanna Be’ since Glorilla was present at the awards; other than that, it was a fantastic show.
We knew we were in for a treat when Video Vanguard winner Katy Perry graced the 2024 VMA stage, as she is a Super Bowl halftime show headliner and multiple award-winning artist. Katy appeals to a wide range of fans, as her music may be enjoyed by people from many walks of life. The singer sang her hit songs “Firework,” “California Gurls,” “Dark Horse,” “I’m His, He’s Mine” with Doechii, and “I Kissed a Girl.” Perry put on a fantastic performance, flying through the air, leaping over her dancers, and emerging in silvery balloon wings. It was a spectacular performance, worthy of someone who had just won video vanguard.
For years to come, people will be thinking about Sabrina Carpenter’s performance. The pop singer further demonstrated her power to the public during her medley at the awards ceremony. She performed three —please, please, taste, and the fan favourite Espresso—from her album “Short and Sweet.” She was surrounded by astronauts and even kissed an alien as a tribute to MTV’s Moon People.
The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer, Chappell Roan, who was new to the VMA stage, gave an incredibly entertaining performance. She appeared on stage dressed in medieval gear and fired a blazing crossbow at a fortified castle. As they danced and brandished swords until the castle burned down, her dancers united the entire production. Roan gave a performance that was incredibly unique and unlike anything we witness every day.
Record breaking Taylor
Pop diva Taylor Swift surely had a fantastic year in 2024 due to to the “Eras Tour,” becoming one of the highest grossing tours in history. With 30 moon people under her belt, Swift has officially surpassed all other artists in VMA history, adding yet another feather to her cap. She took home seven awards, including video of the year, the biggest prize of the evening.
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards delivered another memorable night of music, spectacle, and pop culture moments. As the VMAs celebrated their 40th anniversary, the show demonstrated its continued relevance and ability to capture the zeitgeist of the music industry. The VMAs once again proved to be a platform for artists to make bold statements, whether through their performances, fashion choices, or acceptance speeches. From Megan Thee Stallion’s hosting duties to Sabrina’s solo performance, the show celebrated diversity and highlighted the global reach of pop music. As the curtain falls on another VMAs, it is clear that after four decades, the show remains a vital part of the music industry calendar – a place where careers are launched, legends are celebrated, and unforgettable pop culture moments are made.
