The first time I heard All I Need, I danced. Not in a planned, choreographed way, just that kind of movement your body does when a rhythm feels good. It’s guitar-heavy, super rhythm-driven, and has that live, acoustic feel that makes you imagine hearing it at a tiny show with 30 people swaying around you. It’s emotional, yeah, but not sad. It actually feels… free.
This is Jack Cullen’s first release under RCA Records, and it feels like he’s still doing things completely on his own terms — which makes the whole thing even better. Instead of doing a regular promo run, Cullen is cycling from Glasgow to Glastonbury, stopping in random cities along the way to play small shows hosted by actual fans. He kicked things off at Lost Shore Surf Resort in Edinburgh, then it’s Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, a stop in London to visit his girlfriend, then Glastonbury. After that? Cornwall. It’s low-key, but also kind of iconic.
The song itself came after he ran 12 marathons in 12 days, no big deal, along the Cornish coast. It was part of a charity challenge, but also ended up being the space he needed to write All I Need. And it shows. The lyrics are full of that mix of clarity and softness that comes when you’ve been through something and come out the other side a little lighter:
“All I have is what I need, In my heart, on my sleeve, Everything I want to be, In your eyes, family|In my head, I still believe that you are right next to me.”
There’s a lot of vulnerability in the lyrics, but they don’t feel heavy. It’s more like he’s reminding himself (and us) to pay attention to the good stuff. To people. To presence. And there’s something really grounded in the way he delivers it, no theatrics, no overthinking. Just honest songwriting that sticks.
Jack used to play rugby professionally, and turned to music after surgery and recovery forced him to slow down. That’s when he started writing, and it’s wild how much of that personal journey you can still feel in his sound, especially in All I Need. There’s clarity, but also movement. It’s a song you can feel, not just hear.
If you know his earlier track Teabags and Cigarettes, you’ll recognise the voice and the tone, but this one feels like a fresh chapter. More assured, a little more expansive, but still very much Jack Cullen.
He’s not chasing TikTok moments or viral sounds. He’s literally just riding his bike, guitar strapped to the side, playing music for people who care enough to show up. And that — paired with a song that makes you want to dance, think, and maybe text someone you miss — is kind of the whole point.
