Bruna Garcia loves music and she wants the whole world to know, as she is set to debut her new single “Temperature” on Friday. With influences spanning from classic R&B to Latin and modern Afrobeat, Bruna G brings a fresh, multicultural sound to her music, due to her diverse upbringing and musical inspirations.
Bruna’s love for music blossomed in childhood, fueled by MTV and a dream of performing. “I discovered my love for music and singing at an early age. I would sit for hours watching music videos and award shows on MTV thinking that is exactly what I want to do when I grow up. It wasn’t until secondary school that I really built the confidence to actually write songs and perform in front of an audience.” However, it was her music teacher, Mr. Sefton, who truly nurtured her talent, by introducing her to soulful gospel and making music lessons engaging, giving her the confidence to pursue her passion actively.
With a family also deeply rooted in music, Bruna credits her supportive parents and her Uncle Nuno for instilling in her a profound love for music and its rich history. Her uncle particularly would always tell her the artist’s inspiration for songs they listened to together, or play her the 90’s originals of different samples. Reflecting on these moments, Bruna remarks, “I really wish I could have lived the 90s and early 2000 music era.“
Driven by a desire to express herself and connect with others through music, Bruna draws inspiration from personal experiences and emotions. “I haven’t always been the best at expressing exactly how I feel and songwriting helps me to align my thoughts and feelings, and then articulate them through music. It also allows me to create different versions of reality and explore themes and ideas I care about. I honestly just aim to create music that I like, hoping that it will resonate with someone in some way, whether it be just one line or the feeling of the entire song.”
“I know that even when my confidence is on the floor, singing would always uplift me.”
After college and a period of isolation, collaborating with other established Welsh artists like Miss Faithee rekindled Bruna’s passion for music. Witnessing their dedication, confidence, and industry knowledge was immensely inspiring. From songwriting and performing to self-promotion, these collaborations have taught Bruna so much about the industry.
Her debut single, “Temperature,” which comes out on Friday, the 12th, talks about unrequited love and yearning. “The lyrics for temperature were born from a personal experience of just wanting someone to affirm their feelings. It’s really about a journey of admiring someone and feeling like they want it too, but are too scared of jumping straight in at the deep end. I’m sure so many people have felt something similar at some point or have been on the opposite side, so there’s many different ways to relate to this song. Take from it what you will, but if they don’t give a sign, don’t waste your time!”
The creative process behind “Temperature” involved a fruitful collaboration with Calum Conaghan, The Godfather, as Bruna calls him, who she credits for helping her overcome writer’s block and embrace a free-flowing approach. Inspired by Marques Houston’s “Clubbin’,” the song blends classic R&B with Latin and Afrobeats influences.
“There have been 3 versions of this song, after playing it live with ‘Source’ and also experimenting with different elements of the track. It’s been a long road to get to this release but I’m so excited for everyone to finally be able to stream the song we worked so hard on.”
As Bruna and her listeners look towards the future, she hopes to release more music and eventually her debut EP. She remains committed to following in the footsteps of some of her influences like, “Alicia Keys, Victoria Monet, Stormzy, Raye, Burna Boy, and Beyonce,” Additionally, she seeks to make songs that explore self-discovery, navigate societal expectations as a young Black woman in Wales, and the complexities of love and relationships, aiming to connect with listeners on a deeper level.
She hopes to display this deep passion for her music, during her upcoming performance at the Wales Millennium Centre on April 19th, which marks her first solo show with a full band. Audiences can expect a mix of new and familiar songs, all delivered with the intention of creating an immersive musical experience that evokes emotions, and inspires them to move and enjoy the moment.
Bruna invites listeners for a first listen of her new single, “Temperature” which will be played on BBC radio Wales with Aleighcia Scott on Thursday the 11th (7-10pm) before its release on Friday.
