If you have been following the Welsh music scene, you must have heard of Aisha Kigs, the rising star who hopes to light up Cardiff with her unique sound and energetic performances. Her debut EP, “Fire Hazard” marks a turning point for the Cardiff-based artist, not only musically, but also thematically, signifying her artistic growth and confident stride into adulthood.
The title track, “Fire Hazard,” perfectly summarises the EP. It’s a call to embrace individuality and shed the insecurities collected throughout childhood. Aisha describes the EP as a “coming-of-age chick flick,” drawing inspiration from shows like Sex and the City and Ugly Betty. “Fire Hazard is a message of facing your insecurities and the doubts you pick up throughout your teens and throwing them in the trash when entering adulthood. Celebrating the fact that you can be however you want to be and no one’s perception of you can define you.”
“Fire Hazard is about standing out even if everyone around disapproves. Like fire, confidence can be infectious, sometimes hazardous, but bright, warm and infectious.”
Listeners can expect themes of navigating situationships, in the track ‘Don’t Wanna Be Friends,’ exploring sensuality in ‘Unattainable,’ and confronting self-doubt in ‘The Way It Be,’ all woven with a message of empowerment.
Aisha’s unique sound aims to take listeners through her world, which blends pop and R&B, with hints of Afrobeats, DC Gogo, and Hip Hop. This sound reflects her diverse background, combining her Swahili heritage, Welsh upbringing, and American college experiences.
With this EP, She hopes to show her unique sound, musical influences and all of the themes that have inspired her in recent years.
The “Fire Hazard” launch event promises to be more than just a concert. “I grew up on musical theatre in high school and college, I didn’t realise until I started the production process of this big show how much I picked up on lighting, stage logistics etc. I also grew up studying live performances from my music inspirations, Beyonce and Michael Jackson, watching BTS documentaries on how they piece together stadium shows, but I never got the chance to create a live music production of my music until this point!”
Aisha has envisioned an immersive experience that blends music, fashion, dance, and visuals at the Cabaret in Wales Millenum Centre on April 19th. A 10-piece band will provide the sonic sound, while special guests Hemes and Bruna G will also add their own flavour to the night. She easily describes both women as friends of hers, whose talent she deeply believes in, “The staging for the show is going to be mad, so I believed Bruna and Hemes would be a perfect blend for a Friday night at the Cabaret in Cardiff Bay.”
Her lead single from the EP, “Don’t Wanna Be Friends,” received significant airplay on BBC Radio Wales Welsh A-List, and had a massive impact, She describes the creative process, “I wrote ‘Don’t Wanna Be Friends’ based on a personal situation I was experiencing at the time and jotted down my initial thoughts and feelings straight after the final conversation over a type beat. I later met Minas who collaborated with me and produced DWBF the way you hear it today. I think most people can relate to the trials and tribulations you may have with a partner or a friend and everyone can understand the hard but true notion of setting boundaries being an act of self love.”
More often than not, Aisha draws from her own life experiences to make these unique, beautiful tracks.
Her talent has garnered acclaim from BBC Introducing Wales and BBC Radio Wales, and she is poised for a breakout moment when her EP launches, She describes the event as just the beginning of greater things to come,
“This is not a gig, it’s not even a launch, I aim to create an intimate live music experience. I’ve never done something like this with my own music and having a large team of musicians, dancers, and crew of Welsh creatives that believe in what I’m trying to do always fills my heart. Considering that a show of this scale is my one off, you are not going to want to miss this live production.”
Aisha’s talent and dedication are undeniable, and her “Fire Hazard” launch promises to be an unforgettable night. With its immersive experience and powerful message, this event is sure to solidify Aisha Kigs’ place as a rising star to watch.
