Why Are We So Obsessed with Celebrity Weddings?

The recent wedding ceremony for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant didn’t just break the internet; it practically bought it, redecorated it, and threw it the party of the century. When your guest list reads the Who’s Who of global pop culture – we’re talking Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, rubbing elbows with Nick Jonas, John Cena and Ranveer Singh – you know you’re not at a regular wedding anymore. But the kicker is, millions of people, all around the world were also glued to their screens, devouring every glittery detail. Which begs the question: Why are we so utterly, completely, and irrevocably obsessed with celebrity weddings?

From the Nigerian superstar, Davido and Chioma’s recent nuptials which practically shut down the Nigerian media in early June to the intensity of the 2012 Miss Universe, Olivia Culpo’s wedding to NFL star Christian McCaffrey, and then the spectacle of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s union this past weekend, celebrity weddings continue to captivate global attention.

But why exactly can’t we look away from this highly glamorous events?

Let’s face it: we’re living in an era where royal weddings draw tens of millions of viewers (60 million for William and Kate, 29 million for Harry and Meghan), and where a billionaire’s son can turn his wedding into a star-studded concert featuring performances by Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Justin Bieber. It’s pretty obvious why we can’t get over this.

Part of the allure lies in pure escapism. Celebrity weddings offer a glimpse into a world of unimaginable luxury and glamour. When we see Sofia Richie’s lavish French Riviera ceremony or recall Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s over-the-top European nuptials, we’re transported to a fairy tale far removed from our daily lives. There’s also the element of parasocial relationships at play. We feel connected to celebrities, invested in their personal lives as if they were friends or family. When Justin and Hailey Bieber tied the knot (twice!), fans around the world celebrated as if their own loved ones were walking down the aisle.

These high-profile weddings have practically become cultural touchstones – shared experiences we can discuss with friends, family, and coworkers. Remember the endless chats about George Clooney finally settling down with Amal or the constant speculations on the actual date of Beyonce and JayZ’s wedding? These events give us common ground in an increasingly diverse media space. Of course, we can’t ignore the fashion factor. Kourtney Kardashian’s Dolce & Gabbana-drenched Italian wedding and Hailey Bieber’s internet-breaking “till death do us part” veil are prime examples of how celebrity brides set trends that ripple through the wedding industry for years to come.

The media frenzy surrounding these events is a spectacle in itself. Recall the lengths paparazzi went to for a glimpse of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s highly anticipated 2003 wedding, prompting the couple to use decoy brides to maintain privacy. Today, the pursuit of exclusive content has reached fever pitch, with fans glued to their phones awaiting the latest updates or images. Social media has transformed how we engage with these ceremonies. No longer passive observers, we’re active participants – liking, sharing, and commenting on every detail in real-time. When Barbara Palvin wedded Dylan Sprouse, and Nada Adelle tied the knot with Pretty Little Thing CEO Umar Kamani, their wedding journey was followed by millions across various social media platforms, as though we were all part of the celebration.

But our obsession isn’t without its downsides. The pressure on “regular” couples to have picture-perfect, social media-worthy weddings has never been higher, leading to unrealistic expectations and financial strain.

Which brings us to why we can’t look away? Perhaps celebrity weddings serve as a form of modern mythology – larger-than-life stories of love, beauty, and happily-ever-after’s that we use to escape, connect, and dream. So the next time you find yourself glued to your phone, refreshing for updates on a celebrity wedding, remember, it’s not just you. We’re all a little bit obsessed with these extravagant celebrations of love, escape, and a touch of the extraordinary.
