Thundermoon’s new EP, We Can Do Better Than This, is about to hit, and it’s a message we all need.
This second EP builds on their 2023 debut, We’re Still Here, with five new tracks that combine ‘80s synth nostalgia with DIY beats and lyrics that remind us there’s still hope in a world that often feels overwhelming. According to lead singer Lorna Kelly, “This EP is a reminder that we’re capable of creating something better, even when everything feels a little messed up.”
Each track gets into different emotions, creating a mix of upbeat melodies, introspective lyrics, and a retro vibe that feels incredibly fresh. “We Can Make It” opens with a punch, inviting us to believe that we’re not alone in our struggles. The track’s central line, “You and I know we can make it to the moon, even if we have to crawl,” captures a relentless optimism that stands. From its opening notes, the song serves as an anthem for pushing through life’s challenges, with a beat that feels ready-made for a big crowd.
Then there’s “Perfect Chaos,” a track with spaced-out chords and a catchy chorus that mixes Thundermoon’s signature synth-pop sound with lyrics about embracing the unpredictability of life. This song demonstrates the EP’s central idea: even in chaos, there’s beauty and possibility if we’re willing to see it. K Messer describes it as “a call to action to find harmony in our lives, even when things get messy.”
In “Ritual,” the band explores the theme of forgiveness and the complexity of toxic relationships. The hauntingly melodic record brings a slower, contemplative sound to the EP, balancing the high energy of the other songs with an emotional rhythm. Shaz Jamieson’s harmonies here are pure magic, adding a layer of intensity as the lyrics dig into the sacrifices people make for love and self-discovery.
The EP also includes “Truth or Dare,” an all-out dance track with a steady beat and lyrics that push us to let go of our worries. In the words of the band, it’s “a song for anyone who just needs a moment to dance through their problems.” With its playful energy, it’s the kind of song you want on repeat during a night out with friends. Finally, “Game On” rounds out the EP with a high-energy instrumental track, the perfect closer that lets listeners unwind and mull over the journey they’ve just experienced.
With these tracks, Thundermoon captures the mood of our times—a mix of anxiety, resilience, and a touch of hope for a better world. Following a year of building momentum, including gigs at Knockengorroch, King Tut’s, and the Pyramid Stage at Kelburn Garden Party, they’re bringing their EP release party to Leith FAB Cricket Club on November 16th. Fans can expect an immersive experience, as the band has hinted at some exciting visuals and special guests.
Since signing with the Edinburgh-based indie label New Teeth, Thundermoon’s music has gained traction across Scottish media, with radio play on BBC Scotland and praise from the likes of The Skinny and Snack Magazine. Their DIY approach and nostalgic influences from bands like LCD Soundsystem, CHVRCHES, and Daft Punk have helped them carve out a new sound that’s both familiar and refreshing.
For listeners who crave 80’s nostalgic sound, We Can Do Better Than This is a must-listen. The EP will be available on all major streaming platforms, as well as New Teeth’s Bandcamp, so make sure to tune in on November 8th and catch them live if you’re near Leith later in the month. This release promises not only to make you move but to remind you that, as Thundermoon says, we can do better than this.
