Sun-Soaked, Soul-Heavy: Treeboy & Cactus Corino’s New Single, ‘Lido’

Treeboy & Cactus Corino appear with a new track called “Lido”, a refreshingly genre-bending sound that defies categorisation. Post-punk intertwines with experimental noise and hip hop, resulting in the production of a raw, distinct sound that captivates you. Opening with guitar and ambient sounds, this song builds momentum with nervous energy, mixed with vulnerable vocals that weave together poetry and social commentary. Notably, Sherg’s production uses subtle lo-fi textures and warm basslines to create a minimalistic track, whereby every note feels intentional and perfectly placed to leave meaning in between the space of the notes, allowing the lyricism to counterbalance the beat in perfect harmony.

“If you match the vibe, you can catch it at the Lido, under the sun I bun today, I might jump away, I might slide, I might just create, why the rush today, what’s the fussing ‘ay, come and vibe.”

This catchy, playful chorus is perfect for a nostalgic summer track, reflecting on reconnection and the self. Treeboy’s soulful melody creates a perfect balance on the track between a chill beat and deeply introspective verses, evoking emotion from the listener. The atmosphere is haunting, liminal, and surreal, with the track capturing imagery of sitting at a poolside, letting the internal monologue flow whilst feeling dissociated.

Cactus Corino juxtaposes Treeboy, singing simple yet profound lyrics, eliciting an almost existential vibe. “We were all chill before buildings with electricity. Cold hearts that we fill with liquor nicotine.” He talks of distance and self-reflection, contributing a layer of emotional depth within his lyricism.

Influenced by the culture of modern-day England, this track provides commentary on how contemporary culture has changed over the years. “Lido” illustrates a public swimming pool, becoming a metaphor for class division and the psychological impact of urban abandonment. This phenomenon not only represents physical abandonment, but spiritual abandonment and a sense of the loss of community. There are also symbols of escapism, yearning for a different present, going somewhere that sparks joy in the everyday mundane. There is tension between witnessing urban decay and creating something new in an act of resistance with music.

It is precisely this juxtaposition, between relaxed vibes and self-reflection, that distinguishes Treeboy & Cactus Corino from their counterparts. These new artists do not follow conventional boundaries of music, introducing jazz and RnB sounds into alt-rap to create new, exciting music. The synergy between the artists and producers creates a meaningful, timeless track that resonates on a deeper level with listeners, inviting you to pause and contemplate.
