I listened to Liv Hanna’s “Sign On The Line,” But You Still Have To.
At just 21 years old, New York native Liv Hanna is making waves in the music industry with her blend of Pop, Alt-Pop, Dark Pop, and Pop Rock. After garnering acclaim for her inaugural release “crazy” with Sony’s AWAL in March, the Miami-based singer-songwriter is back with her daring new single, “Sign It on the Line.”
Out today, May 17th, “Sign It on the Line” is a jarring, somber anthem that speaks to the soul about the harrowing topic of suicide. With sentimental, evocative lyrics and Liv’s powerful, soul-stirring vocals, the song is a beautiful, yet heartbreaking exploration of reaching one’s breaking point.
“Sign It on the Line is about reaching that final straw and finally deciding to say goodbye,” Liv explains. “It’s super graphic and depressing, but still written in an anthemic way. I always try to use my music to convey experiences that will make my audience feel something real, and I have decided, to connect music to everything that I go through, and I know from first-hand experience how much a song can influence a mood and help someone.”
While the subject matter is undoubtedly heavy, Hanna’s intention is not to glorify or glamourise suicide, but rather to examine the subject and surrounding circumstances, and ultimately provide solace to listeners who may be struggling with their mental health.
Liv’s music career started on the piano at the age of 8 and then she started performing with elite groups like the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, before her talents caught the attention of Grammy-winning producer and manager Guy Eckstine in 2019. “I was very impressed with Liv’s voice and her ability to conjure up melodies and lyrics in an instant,” Eckstine shared with pride.
This ability is evident in singles such as “Grown up” and “Drowning in Bacardi,” and particularly this new track, “Sign It On The Line,” which has lyrics such as, “I’d write you all a letter, say all my goodbyes. Maybe I can’t see it yet, so it’s time to say goodbye. Seems like the time for me to die. Cause numbness doesn’t count as living” The record was produced by PJ McGinnis, who also helmed her record “Back To Hell” using a guitar-led instrumental that served as the perfect backdrop for Liv’s emotive storytelling.
This track which has been dubbed her most daring and dramatic song yet, shows Liv’s compelling vocals and her insistence on using her platform to make a positive impact, as she declares, “I think that’s why I’ve always been so drawn to music, because no matter what is happening, I always feel something when I listen to or compose a song. I always feel like I am making a difference.”
With a bright future ahead and a slew of new singles on the way, now is certainly the time for the world to truly experience the full force of Liv Hanna’s artistry. Her stunning vocals, skillful lyricism, and unique blend of Pop, Soul, and Hip Hop influences come together in a powerful, emotionally-charged package.
