Sustainable Fashion has rapidly become a buzzword in mainstream media. The term is mentioned time and time again, in print magazines, digital publications, and the mission statements put forward by the most luxurious fashion houses. But despite the universality of the term, a nagging question remains: How do we truly translate sustainable fashion from glossy magazine pages to our everyday wardrobes?
We are providing you with the deep-dive into truly conscious fashion and how simply shopping for items labelled ‘sustainable’ is not enough; we need to completely rethink our purchasing habits and the way we consume clothes so we could also take eco-friendly fashionable steps towards saving the planet.
Shop Vintage and Secondhand Pieces
In 2024, We need to embrace the art of thrifting. Shopping Second-Hand clothes is one of the most effective ways to be sustainable in fashion. Today’s thrift stores are treasure chests of vintage gems and gently-used pieces. It is left to you to unearth unique finds, support local communities, and minimize your environmental footprint – all while discovering your own personal style. Check out this Vintage store in Cardiff, Little Empire Vintage, Flamingos Vintage Cardiff or larger stores in the the UK for timeless fashion, Beyondretro or Thrifted.
Invest in Sustainable Fashion Brands
Buying better means supporting designers who are promoting sustainable practices, including the likes of Rhetorik or Workshy, which are fashion brands that originate from Wales. It is integral to narrow down your search for specific items, whether that’s seeking out brands producing activewear more sustainably or swimwear or even denim. Look for certifications like Fairtrade, GOTS, or B Corp, and empower conscious businesses that are pushing the fashion industry towards a brighter future.
Rent Clothes
Instead of buying a new dress for that wedding or party later this year, why not rent outfits, It’s now easier than ever to rent something to wear instead. According to one study, an astonishing 50million garments are bought and worn just once every summer in the UK alone — a negative habit we need to quickly ditch, given that the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is burned and landfilled every second.
To find Clothing rental stores around your area, you can look up Yelp, Nuuly , and for luxurious pieces Rent the Runway.
Conscious Cleaning
Ditch harsh chemicals and embrace eco-friendly laundry practices. Opt for natural cleaning products, air-dry clothes whenever possible, and invest in a steamer to reduce ironing. These simple steps minimize your environmental footprint and keep your clothes looking their best.
Steer clear of Greenwashing
Fast Fashion Brands such as H&M and Zara have been accused of greenwashing, (i.e when an organization spends more time and money on marketing itself as environmentally friendly than on actually minimizing its environmental impact). Look beyond buzzwords such as ‘sustainable’, ‘eco-friendly’, ‘conscious’ and ‘responsible’ on the packaging and marketing campaigns of these companies, and instead focus on ensuring that the brands have detailed policies to back up their claims.
Embrace Slow Fashion and Invest in Quality
Resist the Instagram buzz of fast fashion sales and impulsive purchases. Take time to consider the quality and longevity of each fashion purchase, Look for natural fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, or linen. These garments will last longer, minimizing waste and saving you money in the long run. Ask yourself: “Do I truly love this piece? Will I wear it for years to come?” Conscious consumption is the key to breaking free from the cycle of overconsumption.
