You know those songs that make you stop mid-scroll, mid-whatever-you’re-doing, and just listen? Diolch is one of them.
It’s the new single from Aleighcia Scott, and it’s her second one in Welsh. Even if you don’t speak the language, the feeling comes through clearly. The song is gentle, emotional, and has this soft rhythm that kind of settles over you. It’s reggae at its core, but it doesn’t shout. It just sits with you.
The Cardiff-born, Jamaican-rooted singer has been on a roll lately — her last Welsh single Dod o’r Galon hit #1 on the iTunes Reggae chart (a first for any Welsh-language reggae song, ever), and Diolch picks up that same emotion but makes it even more intimate. The title means “thank you,” and the song is dedicated to a family member Aleighcia lost, someone she clearly loved deeply.
“This song is really special for me,” she says. “It’s written about a very loved and missed family member who I wanted to celebrate, and for anyone else who wants to do the same.”
Even if you don’t speak Welsh, you’ll feel it in the lyrics, which echoes the words,
“I hope you’re proud of me / Thanks for the love / You’re still here. The laughter, the smiles, the memories. The love, the care, the time, So how do we live without you?| wasn’t ready for you to go, We have everything you’ve taught us, You’re around in many ways.”
Production-wise, Diolch is warm and nostalgic. PenDub, who produced the track builds it all around this soulful little organ riff. Then the drums kick in, the bassline grooves, and these sweet little horn sections float through the mix. It’s giving old-school reggae, but polished and current. Like something your uncle would vibe to, but your Spotify playlist would also love.
The music video, shot in Cardiff Market by Prestigeous Pictures, adds even more feeling. It’s simple and beautiful — just Aleighcia in her element, surrounded by her city, paying tribute to someone who clearly meant the world to her. No extra flash, just good vibes and real emotion.
Aleighcia’s been making serious moves lately. She’s got live dates lined up all summer — Cardiff, Bristol, Stuttgart, Wrexham, Shambala. She’s got her own BBC Radio Wales show, sometimes fills in for David Rodigan on 1Xtra (no big deal), and she just won Y Llais (The Voice Wales) as a coach. She’s literally everywhere right now — but in a way that still feels grounded and true.
And she’s still giving back. On July 2nd, she’s leading a massive singalong event for kids across Wales as part of the Women’s Euros celebrations, performing with her Y Llais winner Rose Datta and Welsh band Eden. Over 250,000 children are expected to join. It’s kind of insane, but also so on-brand for Aleighcia — soulful, rooted, joyful.
So yeah, Diolch isn’t just another single. It’s full of heart, full of soul, and a beautiful way to say “thank you” to someone you miss— even if they’re no longer here in person.
